"I would have to say our group went through a spiritual awakening to find out that Personal Finances for Self-Reliance was a whole lot more than just budgeting, planning and money priorities, we found out the spiritual side was equally important. With lots of promises and blessing -- moving forward required exercising our faith if we were to align our lives with Heavenly Father's plan to help and bless his children. Slowly the groups’ confidence and trust grew for each other, testimonies gained more strength with each class, it provided hope for two of our single sisters, a better communication and marriage relationships dramatically increased for the married couples and feeling the presence of the Spirit also increased.
It was neat to witness how commitments made also changed habits such as reading the Book of Mormon daily committing to budgeting etc. to reporting and sharing experiences, they all help us to grow and feel a stronger unity and peace. I testify that it definitely helped those who were able to take the whole course grow and that these classes are inspired; all we have to do is learn, do and trust.
"As my wife and I have talked about our experience, we continue to be thankful for the opportunity we had to attend the self-reliance classes. We are the biggest cheerleaders of this resource. Initially we both felt like the 2 hour classes for 12 weeks would be very difficult to fit into our schedules. However, we discovered that just the opposite happened and most of the conflicts seemed to just work themselves out. We looked forward to attending the classes and had a wonderful experience as we began to better understand the spiritual foundation to becoming self-reliant. After 18 years of marriage, we were finally able to talk about 'money' openly and in ways that helped us explain to our children the importance of personal finances and how the principles we learned will help guide them throughout their lives.
There is great value in each of the different classes and there’s something for everyone to take away from the trainings. As a real bonus, we grew to love the great people that participated in the classes with us and we truly developed lasting friendships with them. I have no reservations in inviting and recommending the self-reliance classes to the members of my ward or our stake. This really was an amazing experience for my wife and I and a tender blessing from heaven."
"It's easy to fall into a cultural Christian belief that money is bad and wanting more money makes you selfish. Going through the 'Starting My Own Business' program with eight other members really helped turn that philosophy on its head. You can't impact the world in a positive way if you can't take care of yourself. It was a powerful and enlightening feeling to sit with other like minded people as we grew together under the programs guidance to improve our lives, build our businesses and worked to become truly self reliant.
I chose this self reliance topic because I was interested in it myself. I didn't treat this like an opportunity to teach, but one where we could all learn together. I was only the facilitator in that I kept everything on track, but I acted more like another one of the group members in the discussions and responses. I was very clear that I was not a teacher, nor would we have one. I felt that I really followed the direction of what a facilitator should be, and I fell that made all of the difference. What a great experience.
"To tell you the truth, I was scared to death at first to be a facilitator. I don't like to be the center of attention or speak in front of groups of people. Nevertheless, the Spirit of this whole program began to touch my heart the day I was called into Pres. Brockbank's office. As he explained it to me as best he could before "I freaked out", I felt a reassurance that it was an inspired program and that Heavenly Father would be in charge.
I can pretty much sum the whole thing up in three words... "It was awesome!" They said the Spirit would be the teacher. That was absolutely correct. From the first meeting until the last, the Spirit attended our meeting each week, hearts were touched, lives were changed, and I think all of us came away from that class better people than before. Some came away with better financial goals, budgets, and savings plans... but I think ALL came away spiritually stronger, closer to their Heavenly Father than they were before, learning to trust Him, and desiring to be more obedient. It was an amazing experience! I hope everyone can have the opportunity to participate."
"I honestly was a little unsure coming into the program. I am not a financial expert, in fact, before the class I hated having and using a budget. I now no longer hate having a budget, but rather find in interesting to know where my money is going, how much I have at all times, where I can spend and not worry, how I should invest and where I should save for the future.
The biggest surprise for me was how frequent the spirit was at our class. Whether discussing a first time budget, paying off debt, becoming more unified with my smoking hot wife, or protecting our family from hardship, the spirit was often there to testify that the things we were discussing are true and that if we follow the council provided we will be blessed."
